The article addresses an insufficiently studied aspect of literary translation studies the preservation of authorial style when English literary works are translated into Uzbek not directly from the source but through Russian as an intermediary language. The aim of the study is to provide a theoretical account of the mechanism by which stylistic shifts arise in indirect translation, to develop an analytical apparatus capable of distinguishing these shifts according to the stage at which they originate, and to determine the degree to which the layers of authorial style withstand such translation. The analysis draws on works belonging to three different genres and three different individual styles A.C. Doyleʼs detective novella “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, R.L. Stevensonʼs adventure novel “Treasure Island” and the novellas of R. Bradburyʼs science-fiction cycle “The Martian Chronicles” together with their Russian and Uzbek editions. Methodologically, in contrast to the conventional two-text comparison, a three-text contrastive analysis (source – intermediary Russian text – Uzbek translation) is applied, combined with linguo-stylistic, contextual-semantic and linguoculturological methods of analysis. The study substantiates, for the first time, a “two-fold transformation” model, by means of which stylistic phenomena are classified into heritage losses, secondary losses and secondary compensations. The principal scholarly conclusion is that in indirect translation stylistic shifts arise systematically not at one but at two stages, and that they can be objectively assessed only through a three-text comparison.
