This article analyzes the theoretical foundations of the category of modality in linguistics and logic, as well as its semantic and functional characteristics. Modality is regarded as an important linguistic category that expresses the speakerʼs attitude toward the content of an utterance and objective reality. The study examines the objective and subjective types of modality, the means of their expression, and their place within the language system. In addition, a comparative analysis is conducted of the scholarly views on modality proposed by such researchers as Ch. Bally, V. G. Gak, M. Halliday, N. A. Slyusareva, and J. Yakubov. The article explores the morphological, lexical, and syntactic means of expressing modality, with particular attention paid to the semantic potential of modal verbs. The research is carried out within the framework of the onomasiological approach, focusing on the use of the modality of possibility in simple and complex sentences in English. Furthermore, the communicative functions of modality, its significance in the process of speech activity, and its manifestations at different levels of language are discussed. The findings substantiate the importance of the category of modality in communication, its realization through various linguistic means, and the interrelationship between linguistic and logical modality.
